Coming-of-age dramedy CODA made Apple the first streaming service to win the biggest Oscar of them all this year, beating streaming giant rivals like Netflix and Amazon to the punch.

The film, which premiered globally on Apple TV Plus in 2021, won Best Picture at the 94th Academy Awards, as well as taking home the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for Troy Kotsur, and the Best Adapted Screenplay trophy for writer-director Sian Heder.

A remake of the 2014 French film La Famille Bélier, CODA revolves around Ruby Rossi, the sole hearing member of a Deaf family. Her life is ruled by acting as her parents’ (Marlee Matlin, Troy Kotsur) interpreter: that is, until she joins her high school’s choir club and discovers her gift for singing. From this point onwards, the spine of the film is formed by Ruby’s huge dilemma as she’s torn between pursuing her passion as a singer and supporting her family in their fishing business.

Following the film’s Oscars glory, fans will be thrilled to hear that CODA is set to return to cinemas in the UK.

But is the film available online to watch from the comfort of your own home? Read on for everything you need to know about how to watch CODA.

Although it did have a short theatrical window, CODA has always been primarily a streaming movie – and as such, it is very easy to watch online, provided you have an Apple TV Plus subscription.

After premiering to rave reviews at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival, Apple quickly snapped up the distribution rights for a festival record fee of $25 million last year, and it has since been billed as an Apple original film.

It was added to the streaming service on Friday 13th August, and later became the first Apple film to score a nod for Best Picture.

If you're not yet a subscriber, you can sign up for Apple TV Plus for £4.99 a month in the UK –and there's also the option of a one-week free trial.

Can I watch CODA in cinemas?

Fresh off its Oscars victory, Apple is re-releasing CODA in UK cinemas for a limited theatrical run from Friday, 8th April.

Open captions will be made accessible for the deaf and hard of hearing.
The return follows a similar move in the US, where CODA is getting a limited theatrical rerun (from Friday, 1st April) in more than 600 cinemas.
“As our industry recognises CODA with its highest honour, we’re excited once again to bring this moving film to theatres so that audiences can share in the experience of watching it together," Erica Anderson, a film distribution exec for Apple Original Films and Apple TV Plus, explained in a statement.

She continued: "As with previous theatrical runs, all showings will have open captions, so that the film is accessible to the deaf and hard-of-hearing communities."

Is CODA available on Netflix?

CODA

Sadly, CODA is not available on Netflix.

As it's an Apple original, the film is exclusive to the streamer and therefore won't be available on any platforms – so signing up for Apple TV Plus is you're only opportunity to watch the film at present.

Sadly, there are no plans to re-release CODA in cinemas in the UK, meaning the only way you can watch the film is with an Apple TV Plus subscription as detailed above.

Is there a CODA DVD and Blu-ray release?

It's not completely unheard of for streaming films to be given a physical media release, but as yet there's no indication that this will be the case for CODA.

Should that change, we'll update this page accordingly with all the relevant details.
